From Ms. Atkins:
Reminder to all grade 8’s to read chapter 9: the Emergence of the Nation-State and to take notes. We will only spend 1 or 2 lessons on this chapter, then we will move on to the grade 9 curriculum starting with the English Civil War. Have a great spring break and email me if you have any questions! atkins.socialstudies@gmail.com

From Ms. Atkins:
Where should settlement occur?
INDIVIDUALLY:
You will use the information from your notes AND the geographic information handout to determine where the settlement of the Aztec, Inca, and Maya people may have been – READ THESE CAREFULLY and you will find clues!
Shade and label the settlements of the three Aboriginal groups on your map.
Make a guess at how large the settlements were

From Ms. Atkins:
Primary Source Document notes:
What is it?
- An artifact, a document, a recording, or other source of information that was created at the time under study.
They are usually incomplete sources of information. We all participate in making history – we
all leave behind primary source documents
CHECKLIST:
- created at the time of an event, or very soon after
- created by someone who saw or heard an event themselves
- often one-of-a-kind, or rare letters, diaries, photos and newspapers (can all be primary sources)
Is it a Secondary source?
- created after event; sometimes a long time after something happened
- often uses primary sources as examples
- expresses an opinion or an argument about a past event
- history text books, historical movies and biographies (can all be secondary sources)
The following questions are asked about primary sources:
What is the tone?
Who is the intended audience?
What is the purpose of the publication?
What assumptions does the author make?
What are the bases of the author’s conclusions?
Does the author agree or disagree with other authors of the subject?
Does the content agree with what you know or have learned about the issue?
* Find a primary source document around your house (ex. a picture of your grandparents) and apply the question sequence to it. See what kinds of answers you come up with!
Friday we will be looking at a primary source document from the age of Exploration.
Finish your “key players” booklets….
